Newbuild Cargo Ship Na Pae e Hiro To Feature Bound4Blue’s eSAIL System
Spanish suction sails developer giant bound4blue has reportedly secured its first-ever deal for a newbuild vessel. The firm has been chosen to install a 22-meter eSAIL system on the multipurpose cargo vessel named the Na Pae e Hiro, which is all set to be delivered in 2026. The new build is expected to operate between Tahiti and the Austral Islands in the South Pacific for SNA Tuhaa Pae, loaded with supplies and almost 200 tourists.
The suction sail of Bound4blue, which the firm says generates seven times more lift than a traditional aeroplane wing, is likely to aid the ship in cutting energy consumption by 10%. The firm was recently chosen by the Rotterdam-based agricultural major Louis Dreyfus Company for retrofitting one of the chartered juice carriers that have four 26-meter eSAILs back in 2024.
David Ferrer, the co-founder and chief technology officer of bound4blue, said this is a standout deal for bound4blue, marking the first time the technology has been picked for a new build after a competitive international tender procedure.
They believe this reflects the growing appreciation of the firm’s unique offers and expertise worldwide. The 89-meter vessel is set to be constructed at the Armon Shipyard based in Vigo, Spain, with the naval architecture successfully delivered by Cotenaval and the consultancy by ECO.
Besides eSail, the new build will feature engines capable of operating on biofuel/e-fuel as soon as they become commercially available in the area. This project is backed by France’s government’s initiative, Appel à Manifestation d’intérêt.
