France Deploys Helicopter Carrier To Support The People Of Gaza

The French Assault ship Tonnerre heads towards the Eastern Mediterranean to assist hospitals in Gaza, where medical supplies are running out of stock due to the Israeli attack.

The initiative has been taken to provide a sense of security that the people of Gaza have the necessities and treatment facilities.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of the helicopter carrier.

Since October 7, Israel has been carrying out airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in response to an attack by Hamas on Israeli communities that resulted in the deaths of almost 1,400 people.

The health ministry of Gaza says that over 7,000 Palestinians have died and thousands more injured.

The 199-meter-long Tonnerre is on a humanitarian mission, according to France’s Defence Ministry. However, it’s unclear exactly what kind of relief this is—whether it’s medical supplies or treating wounded Palestinians on board.

Meanwhile, proposals for humanitarian corridors into and out of Gaza and for bombardment pauses to allow assistance access are being considered by EU leaders concurrently with the deployment of the Tonnerre.

In addition to carrying tanks, amphibious vehicles, and military helicopters, the Tonnerre can double as a floating hospital with numerous operating rooms, multiple beds, an x-ray unit, and two surgical units.

Previously, the ship was sent on humanitarian missions to French territory hit by hurricanes in the Caribbean and to Corsica during the COVID-19 pandemic.
