The Indian Register of Shipping (abbreviated as the IRS) declared the inaugural Cadets’ Training Ship’s keel-laying event a success, conducted at L&T’s shipyard in Kattupalli, Chennai. The event also represents the start of an entirely novel phase in indigenous shipbuilding and maritime education.

The Cadets’ Training Ship, the flagship of a trio of IRS vessels under construction, is intended to carry 210 Naval cadets, comprising 60 female cadets and international trainees.

The completion of the vessel is anticipated by 2026 (October), reflecting a critical step forward in boosting maritime training capabilities. These Cadets’ Training Ships, equipped with modern technology, are ready to serve as maritime educational hubs.

They strive to address the increasing needs of the Indian Navy and international partners by providing hands-on knowledge, practical skills training, and theoretical understanding.

Furthermore, the vessels are extremely versatile, and they can be used for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions, demonstrating multiple utilities.

Cdr. KK Dhawan (retired), Head of Defence of the IRS, expressed satisfaction in commemorating the keel-laying event and emphasizing the IRS’ undying commitment to aiding Indian shipbuilding.

Notably, a significant portion of the vessels’ systems and equipment will be sourced from indigenous manufacturers, highlighting the IRS’ dedication to boosting self-reliance and supporting small, micro, and medium-sized enterprises (abbreviated MSMEs).

He emphasized the IRS’s delight in contributing to the Indian Navy’s ambition for domestic shipbuilding and aligning with the Government of India’s vision of the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.

The keel-laying ceremony also represents an alliance between L&T Shipyard, IRS, and other stakeholders, marking a turning point in India’s road to maritime self-sufficiency.

It also underscores the country’s commitment to nurturing skilled maritime people and fostering innovation in shipbuilding, strengthening its position in the worldwide maritime arena.
