Bureau Veritas Introduces First Classification Rules For Hydrogen-Fueled Vessels
A significant step toward improving safety procedures in the maritime industry has been taken with the introduction of the first classification Rules for hydrogen-fueled ships (NR678) by Bureau Veritas.
This well-known international organisation specialises in inspection, testing, and certification. This calculated action aims to promote safely incorporating hydrogen propulsion technology into ships.
The recently published regulations outline specific technical specifications for the whole range of hydrogen applications on ships.
Reducing the risks associated with hydrogen, such as leaks, fires, and explosions, is the primary objective of BV’s regulations for ships that run on hydrogen.
The rules cover numerous topics, such as the arrangement of the engines and machinery, the systems and fuel tanks, and the vessel itself.
The regulations include strict pressure relief and venting guidelines, safety protocols, vapour and gas detection, and ventilation in potentially hazardous areas.
“Hydrogen-prepared” ships—those built to install a hydrogen fuel system—are also covered by the classification rules. This comprehensive strategy is in line with the BV rule note (NR 547) that was introduced in 2022 and addresses fuel cell power systems on ships that can accommodate a variety of fuels.
With ten hydrogen-related projects underway, BV has used industry assessments and input from various stakeholders to help shape NR678.
Based on the most recent industry insights regarding hydrogen as a ship fuel, these regulations will be updated regularly to reflect technological changes and flag state and International Maritime Organization regulations.
