M/V Tonsberg: The World’s Largest Roll-on, Roll-off (Ro-Ro) Ship

Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s MV Tonsberg is the largest ro-ro vessel in the world. A Mark V class vessel which is supposed to be fitted with the most advanced technology, M/V Tonsberg is built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan.

Some of the interesting features of the ship include:

  • Length of 265 meters
  • 12 meters wide stern ramp
  • Safe working load of 505 tons
  • Cargo volume of 138,000 cubic meters
  • 6 fixed and 3 hoist able decks
  • Main deck with clear height of 7.1 meters
  • Consumes 15 to 20% less fuel per transported unit than its counterparts
  • Energy saving features such as optimized hull form, streamlines rudder design, duck tail, and advanced turbo generator

 

The Ship is so huge that it can easily carry massive machines such as bulldozers, excavators, wheel loaders, and harvesters. Electric winches provide flexibility to its decks and a Unitor water ballast treatment system prevents microorganism from entering the sea. M/V Tonsberg is one of four such vessels that are to be launched by 2012.
