Volunteers share their experience and stories related to the ship, which enhances the visitor experience.
There is a self-guided audio tour, narrated by former sailors of the ship, to over 60 locations including sleeping areas, bridge, galley, engine room, post office, officers’ quarters, primary flight control, officers’ county, etc.
The tour is available in many languages. Other features include a climb aboard aircraft and cockpits, flight simulators, etc.
The Flight deck has 26-plus restored aircraft and an interactive exhibit demonstrating carrier landing systems. It also has 7 pilot-ready rooms for mission planning and briefings, and access to the island or bridge for flight control tours.
The hangar deck has interactive displays of the Battle of Midway and also exhibits of WWII aircraft engines and designs. It also has bunks and living quarters to show how sailors lived.
The Below Deck area has a galley, chow line, wardroom, a chapel, dental clinic, post office, engine rooms and control rooms.
An HD holographic movie theatre called ‘The Battle of Midway Theatre’ was added in 2017, and in 2019, the museum added a virtual reality flight simulator ride apart from the existing 4 flight simulators.
Special Events
The San Diego International Film Festival and the GI Film Festival scheduled screenings at the museum.
The biggest museum ship of the United States also hosted several high-profile events and productions, like in 2018 and 2019, a few scenes from the movie, Top Gun: Maverick were shot on the museum ship. Also, the planes shown in the film are displayed at the museum.
Also, each anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is marked by a special memorial service onboard the flight deck, where hundreds of people gather each year. The names of all those who lost their lives are read out aloud to remember them.
