The smoke billowing from Durban Harbor around the afternoon on Thursday resulted from a smouldering incident on a vessel.
The Transnet National Ports Authority said it occurred on a registered bulk carrier vessel, M/V DE SHENG 1, that docked at the Maydon Wharf Precinct on 20 December.
The incident was reported on 29 December, and the vessel was put on lockdown. It is pending further examinations.

Transnet said that the crew members on the vessel were safely evacuated with no reported injuries.
It said impacted stakeholders and customers had been notified of the incident and its impact on the port operations.
Transnet National Ports Authority’s Fire and Emergency Services, Marine Safety, Port Control, and the eThekwini Fire Department were reportedly dispatched to monitor the situation closely and provide appropriate relief.
The port mentioned that it welcomed the support it had been receiving from the industry and monitored recovery continuously to ensure minimal impact on operations while not raising the cost of doing business.
