Watch: MSC Container Ship Struck In The Breakwaters Of Italy’s Largest Container Port
The 8566 TEU containership MSC Elaine remains grounded at one of Italy’s largest container ports despite attempts by 5 tugboats to dislodge it.
The Panama-flagged ship was heading to its next port of call in Marsaxlokk, Malta, when it swung while turning and grounded along the southern breakwater at the entrance of Gioia Tauro port, Italy, on the morning of 9th January 2023.
Many photos and videos on social media depicted the 340-metre-long boxship with its starboard bowing upwards against the breakwaters with several tugs assisting it.

A 2009 construction, this ship does not suffer from any severe damages, per the divers who conducted inspections. Luckily, they did not find any leakages or pollution in the nearby waters due to the ship.
The local authority stated that the cause of the accident is being investigated. The weather conditions were benign when the accident occurred.
Due to the ship’s grounding, the incoming and outgoing maritime traffic at the biggest container hub in Italy has been severely affected.
