A bulk carrier flying the Panama flag collided with a Chinese fishing vessel near the Singapore Strait. The vessels were the bulk carrier First Margaux and the Chinese fishing vessel Luqing Yuanyu 108.

A video circulating online shows the collision. The bulk carrier’s bow can be seen hitting the fishing vessel’s starboard quarter. The smaller vessel then lists heavily, while water washes across its deck. People on board appear to hold on as the vessel moves in the water.

No deaths or injuries have been reported so far. There is also no official confirmation that the fishing vessel sank or caused pollution.

The date of the collision has not been confirmed. Reports based on AIS tracking data from Pole Star Global said the incident happened on Sept. 17, while some other reports put the date at Sept. 20.

After the collision, Luqing Yuanyu 108 continued transmitting an AIS signal. The vessel remained visible on tracking systems and appeared to reach a nearby berth. First Margaux also continued sailing.

The extent of the damage to the fishing vessel has not been confirmed.

The Panama Maritime Authority told La Prensa Panamá that it was investigating the collision but has not released a detailed account.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has also not issued a detailed statement, based on the information available.

AIS tracking shows another vessel, Gas Iris, was also in the area. However, Singaporean maritime officials have not confirmed the AIS reconstruction.

The exact movements of the two vessels before the collision remain unclear. It is also not known whether any warnings were given or which vessel had the right of way.

First Margaux was built in 2023. It is about 229 metres long and 32 metres wide and has a deadweight capacity of about 82,000 tonnes.

The vessel has been described as Japanese-owned and Chinese-managed. It was sailing towards Singapore when the collision occurred.

Luqing Yuanyu 108 was built in 2014. The Chinese-flagged fishing vessel is about 49 metres long and 10 metres wide and has a gross tonnage of around 496 tonnes.

The Singapore Strait is used by large commercial ships and smaller vessels. Singapore operates a Vessel Traffic Information System in the area, and larger vessels are required to report through STRAITREP.
