The US Navy’s nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine USS Connecticut will become operational in September this year, after undergoing 3 years of extensive repairs.

The Navy’s second Seawolf-class SSN had grounded in 2021, on a seamount while operating submerged in a poorly surveyed region.

The incident occurred during its scheduled deployment in the Indo-Pacific.

At that time, the navy assured that the crew did not suffer from serious injuries and the submarine’s nuclear propulsion or other vital systems were also not affected.

Investigation conducted by the Navy revealed that the incident could have been prevented and resulted from unit-level mistakes, inadequate navigation planning, poor execution and risk management, all of which were found to be below the established standards.

After this, the submarine’s commanding officer, the executive officer, and the chief of the boat were relieved from duty due to “loss of confidence.”

USS Connecticut underwent repairs and maintenance from 2023 onwards, and the task is expected to be completed by September 2026.

Her reactivation will not affect her scheduled decommissioning planned for 2031, per Navy officials.

Designed during the Cold War era, the Seawolf-class SSNs will be gradually replaced with the Virginia-class boats.
