U.S. Navy Awards $70 Million Contract To Develop Solid Rocket Motor Booster for New Weapon
X-Bow Systems Inc (X-Bow®), a U.S. non-traditional manufacturer of solid rocket motors (SRMs), announced it has been awarded a prototype agreement worth nearly $70 million to develop and qualify a solid rocket motor booster for a key U.S. Navy next-generation weapon, a program central to addressing future surface warfare challenges.
The award is the latest of six new propulsion programs X-Bow has been selected for in 2026, spanning the Navy, Army, and the Missile Defense Agency. This builds on the company’s recently completed first major production contract, which delivered more than 2,100 combat-ready rocket motors—a tangible demonstration of the ‘production is deterrence’ capacity the nation needs.
“To be the Arsenal of Freedom, we must first break the decades-old bottleneck in solid rocket motor production,” said Jason Hundley, Founder and CEO of X-Bow Systems. “This award is a clear signal the Pentagon is investing in advanced manufacturing to solve that problem, and we are ready to deliver the affordable, mass-producible propulsion our nation needs.”
Administered by U.S. Army Contracting Command – Rock Island, the agreement has a total potential value of $69.7 million. It comprises a $50.4 million Phase 1 development effort and a $19.3 million Phase 2 qualification option, with $50 million obligated at award to fund the 12-month Phase 1 effort incrementally.
The program replaces single-purpose interceptors with a common architecture, including variants that pack more interceptors into each launch system. The Navy plans to field an initial capability in early FY 2031.
X-Bow will execute the program across its advanced manufacturing and R&D facilities in California, New Mexico, and Texas. The agreement funds rate tooling for a production line of up to 500 motors per year at the company’s Luling, Texas, site, leveraging X-Bow’s Modular Motor Architecture.
