Tanker Hit By 2 Unknown Projectiles In Persian Gulf Off Qatar, Crew Status Unconfirmed
Two projectiles struck a tanker in the Persian Gulf off Qatar on Wednesday night, adding to the growing list of attacks on merchant ships in the region.
The incident took place about 50 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal at 2320 GMT on November 4, 2026, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which said it had received a verified report.
UKMTO has not named the vessel or its flag state. The status of the crew, the damage and any pollution is yet to be ascertained. The agency has asked vessels in the area to remain vigilant and inform it of anything suspicious, as investigations continue.
Till now, no party has owned up to the strike.
UKMTO is a British military agency that receives reports from merchant ships in the region and issues warnings to the shipping industry.
Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported on Thursday that two oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels were not named, and it is unclear whether one of them is the tanker mentioned by UKMTO.
This is not the first time that a tanker has been targeted in these waters. On October 7, an oil tanker was hit by multiple projectiles around 51 nautical miles north of the same town, with casualties reported.
The development comes amid the ongoing conflict between the U.S and Iran, which has kept the shipping routes around the Strait of Hormuz under constant threat.
Adding to the difficulty, UKMTO had said last month that the actual number of attacks was hard to establish, since many vessels were sailing with their transponders off and many did not report incidents.
