Work Begins On £1.8bn Tunnel So Trains Can Pass Under The Panama Canal
A major construction project under one of the most famous canals is underway.
Recently, construction and lining work began on the first underwater tunnel which will pass under the Panama Canal to be used by the nation’s Metro Line 3 monorail project.
President of Panama José Raúl Mulino, said that the tunnel boring machine had been started to construct the tunnel for Line 3 of the Panama Metro.
He appreciated the workforce operating the machines to dig through rocks 65 m under the canal’s seabed for 22 months.
The tunnel would be a major part of the Metro Line 3 Project, which began to tackle congestion in the metropolitan area. The project is expected to cost around $2.5 billion and create about 5,000 jobs.
Construction is 63% complete and will link the nation’s east and west parts. This monorail technology will enable the service to move through regions where elevation varies.
Work on Phase I of the project linking Albrook to the Ciudad del Futuro sector started in February 2021, per Railway Technology experts.
It will serve 20,000 people during peak hours with a waiting time of 4 minutes between the services. Phase 2 will extend to La Chorrera and serve 32,000 people by 2050.
HPH Consortium is the main contractor, appointed in 2020. It comprises Hyundai E&C, POSCO E&C, and Hyundai Engineering.
The work is expected to be completed in the 2nd quarter of 2026.
