Watch: Iran Shows Off Its Secret Underground Naval Base In The Persian Gulf
Iran has revealed a new underground naval base in the Persian Gulf, just days before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump begins his second term.
The base is 500 meters below the surface and is designed to house missile-equipped vessels, including radar-evading speedboats capable of launching cruise missiles.
The exact location of the base is not disclosed, but it is reportedly situated in Iran’s strategic southern waters, including the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman. These waterways are critical for global oil trade.
State-run Iranian television aired footage of General Hossein Salami, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), inspecting the base during military exercises.
He confirmed that the base is one of several underground facilities designed to house vessels capable of launching long-range missiles and conducting distant warfare.
Salami, speaking to the nation, said that Iran’s young people are ready to defend the country, regardless of the size of the enemy.
There are tensions in Tehran that Trump might give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the green light to attack Iran’s nuclear sites while imposing sanctions on the country’s oil industry under his “maximum pressure” policy.

State television also revealed that the base is home to several new Taregh-class speedboats, which are equipped with advanced missile-launching capabilities.
Iran claims that these boats are capable of targeting and destroying U.S. warships and destroyers.
The Iranian government has previously revealed other underground “missile cities” that house missile production facilities and large-scale storage areas.
While President Trump prepares to begin his second term, many in Iran are concerned about the impact of his administrative policies. During his first term, Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed harsh sanctions on the country disrupting its economy.
Besides this, the U.S. also killed General Qasem Soleimani, a top Iranian military commander, in a drone attack.
In response, Iran is focusing on growing its military capabilities. Earlier this month, Iran began a two-month-long series of military exercises that included simulations of defending key sites like the Natanz nuclear facility from missile and drone attacks.
Iran has also included 1,000 new drones, which are said to have high stealth and anti-fortification abilities. The country will also add new warships to its naval forces in the coming months.
In a sign of deeper military cooperation, Iran and Russia signed a partnership agreement on January 17, to enhance defence cooperation and joint military exercises.
While Iran continues to claim that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, concerns over its increasing uranium enrichment levels remain.
Iran is the only non-nuclear weapons state to have enriched uranium to 60%, a key step for producing nuclear weapons.
The country says that its ballistic missile program is a defensive measure, but the international community remains careful of its long-term intentions.
