Ukraine Successfully Exports 13 Million Tons Of Goods Via Black Sea Corridor

Ukraine has successfully shipped 13 million tons of goods via the recently constructed Black Sea shipping corridor. The new corridor was established after Russia withdrew from an agreement that guaranteed the safe passage of vessels in the area. A total of 430 vessels have been cleared for loading at Ukrainian ports since the channel’s establishment in August, according to Oleksandr Kubrakov, the minister of infrastructure for Ukraine, who provided the information on X.

For Ukraine, the creation of this corridor was significant because it made it possible to ship vital goods—grains in particular—from its deep-water ports. Following Russia’s departure from the UN-backed Black Sea grain arrangement in July, which had ensured safe harvest transit, Ukraine was forced to depend on more challenging and lengthy river routes, reducing crop exports.

Ukraine was able to reverse the situation, even though Russia profited from Ukraine’s weakness in the grain market by growing its grain exports in August. A robust domestic harvest, alongside audacious naval strikes against Russian forces aiming at ships heading toward Ukraine, helped Kyiv to take back control and stabilise grain prices.

The cargo movement has been praised by US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink, who called it “a significant achievement as Ukraine continues to feed the world.”

Ukraine’s planned move coincides with Russia’s decision to shift its naval assets from Crimea to Novorossiysk due to ongoing vessel attacks, the most recent of which happened on December 26. The French Scalp and British Storm Shadow cruise missiles, which allow precise strikes on Russian targets and tip the scales in favour of Ukraine, are another factor contributing to its success in using the Black Sea passage.

Russia’s fleet “can no longer operate in the western part of the Black Sea,” according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who praised the development as a “historic achievement” for his nation. Ukraine has demonstrated its ability to overcome obstacles and maintain its position as a significant global grain exporter through its persistent resilience and intelligent movements.
