U.S Strikes & Destroys 3 Houthi Anti-Ship Missiles in the Red Sea
The United States destroyed three anti-ship missiles launched by Houthis in a fresh round of attacks carried by the U.S. against the Group amidst heightening tensions in the Red Sea region.
According to the statement posted by the U.S. Central Command on platform X, the attack was carried out on January 19, around 6:45 p.m. (Sanaa time), as the anti-ship missiles aimed into the Southern Red Sea posed an ‘imminent threat’ to commercial ships and U.S. Navy vessels in the Red Sea.
The missiles in Houthi-controlled regions of Yemen were identified by U.S. forces and were struck and subsequently destroyed in self-defence. This action would make the international waters safe for U.S. Navy ships and commercial vessels, the statement mentioned.
On Thursday, Houthis launched 2 anti-ship ballistic missiles at the U.S. vessel Chem Ranger; however, no injury or large-scale damage was reported, per the U.S. Central Command.
Before this, the U.S. launched strikes on 14 missiles of the Houthis, loaded to be fired. The U.S. said that the January 17 attack was part of its multi-national efforts to uphold freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and prevent attacks on U.S. ships and commercial shipping.
The U.S. has redesignated the Yemeni Group as a terrorist organisation due to their continued attacks on ships in the Red Sea and has imposed sanctions on it. The Houthis mentioned that the designation would not impact its operations to prevent Israeli vessels from crossing the Red Sea, the Bab-al-Mandeb and the Arabian Sea.
