The U.S Navy has awarded two contracts worth $98 million to BAE Systems for modernising and upgrading the littoral combat ship USS Kansas City (LCS 22) and the guided missile destroyer USS Stockdale (DDG 106).

USS Kansas City will be drydocked, and the trimaran vessel will undergo hull preservation and an upgrade to its onboard systems.

Living spaces will also be refurbished for the comfort of the ship’s 41 crew members. The work will begin in May this year, per media reports.

The work schedule for USS Stockdale is also the same. Apart from hull preservation, the company’s Southern California shipyard will recondition its superstructure, its fuel and ballast tanks and modernise the living areas.

The USS Kansas City is the 12th ship of the Independence class of littoral combat ships. It is the 3rd U.S. Navy ship named after the biggest city in the state of Missouri.

USS Kansas City measures 377 feet lengthwise, 103 feet breadthwise and can sail at speeds of over 40 knots. She has a crew of 70 personnel.

Littoral Combat Ships are fast, agile and operate near shores, handling coastal threats.

USS Stockdale belongs to the Arleigh Burke-class, Aegis guided missile destroyer, and is the first Navy ship named after Admiral James Bond Stockdale.

Built by Bath Iron Works, the ship was delivered to the Navy in 2008 and made its legendary Panama Canal transit in 2009.

The ship has a displacement of 9200 tons, is 155.3 m long, 20 m wide and has a 6.7 m draft. It can attain a speed of 30 knots and has a complement of 380 officers.
