Two cruise ships, the Viking Octantis and World Voyager, collided at Argentina’s Port of Ushuaia on January 6, 2026.

The cause is said to be strong winds, which averaged at 30 knots, but stronger ones reaching a speed of 40 knots or 46 miles per hour were said to be the culprit.

The incident occurred when the 10,000 gross ton World Voyager broke from its moorings when its nautical rope snapped.

World Voyages struck the dock before colliding with the 30,150 gross ton Viking Octantis.

The 125 crew members of the World Voyager took action to soften the impact; however, with strong winds, they could not prevent the collision.

This is not the first time such an incident has happened.

In 2025, Norwegian Epic, Celebrity Edge and MSC Seascape broke free from their moorings due to bad weather.

In the past year, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge, and MSC Cruises’ MSC Seascape have all broken free from their moorings due to inclement weather.

No injuries were reported from either ship.

The ships did not suffer any major structural damag but they did go through an inspection.

The impact was above the waterline for both ships, which protected their seaworthiness.

Viking Octantis only had minor damage to its rear railing on one of the outer decks.

World Voyager got a crack in its bow, but the damage is not major, and the ship is not taking on water.

Both vessels sailed as planned with Viking Octantis on an 11-night trip to Antarctica via the Drake Passage.

World Voyager is on a 10-night expedition to the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.
