Singapore Port Breaks Record With 3 Billion Gross Tons In Vessel Arrivals For 2023

The Port of Singapore reported a record-breaking annual vessel arrival tonnage of 3 billion gross tons (GT) in 2023, recognised as a historic accomplishment. On December 25, 2023, the ONE Olympus, an 8,628 TEU, 98,799 GT container ship flying the Singapore flag, arrived at the Pasir Panjang Terminal, formally marking the milestone.

This remarkable accomplishment represents a substantial rise above the 2.83 billion GT reported in 2022. Acting Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat attended an organised ceremony to commemorate the historic event. He also highlighted the importance of solid tripartite cooperation between industry, government, and unions.

Chee Hong Tat emphasised Singapore’s advantage, particularly in its reliable tripartite ecosystem, in addition to its hardware, infrastructure, and technological prowess. He recognised the difficulties that the marine industry has faced recently, such as the 2016 industry slump, disruptions brought on by COVID-19, and the present state of uncertainty in the world economy.

The chief executive of Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority, Teo Eng Dih, expressed appreciation for Singapore’s continuous standing as a preferred port of call. He described current projects, like the Just-in-Time Planning and Coordination Platform, introduced on October 1, 2023, and intends to improve port calls, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve vessel delivery times.

All ships arriving in Singapore starting in January 2024 will be able to utilise the JIT Platform, which was first introduced for vessels halting at PSA terminals and Jurong Port. The government, industry, and unions were underlined to work together to sustain and grow Singapore’s maritime success.

35.6 million TEUs of containers had been handled by Singapore’s port as of November, and efforts are being made to keep up efficiency gains and satisfy the growing needs of international shipping.
