Salvage Experts Dispatched To Burning Car Carrier ‘Morning Midas’ Off Alaska

A specialised salvage team is set to arrive early next week to tackle a persistent fire aboard the cargo ship Morning Midas, which remains afloat but still burning roughly 340 miles southwest of Adak, Alaska, according to officials.
The 600-foot vessel, managed by London-based Zodiac Maritime, caught fire on June 3 while en route from Yantai, China, to Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico, carrying about 3,159 vehicles. Among these were approximately 65 fully electric and 681 hybrid vehicles.
Despite the crew’s prompt activation of emergency firefighting systems and protocols, the blaze grew uncontrollable, forcing all 22 crew members to abandon the ship safely. They were rescued by the nearby container vessel Cosco Hellas and suffered no injuries, Zodiac Maritime confirmed.
The salvage tug carrying fire specialists and specialised equipment is expected to reach the scene around June 9. Another firefighting tug capable of towing the vessel is also being arranged. Meanwhile, Zodiac Maritime continues to monitor the ship’s position through satellite tracking, although onboard condition monitoring remains limited.

The U.S. Coast Guard has reported the ship is still alight with smoke visible from recent overflights but shows no signs of sinking or significant water ingress. No pollution has been detected in surrounding waters so far. Authorities have issued a notice warning mariners to avoid the area.
The Morning Midas is carrying an estimated 350 metric tons of gas fuel and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil, adding urgency to the containment efforts. The vessel, flying the Liberian flag and built in 2006, has a clean inspection record with no recent deficiencies reported.
