MV Tutor Ship Sinks After Houthi Drone Attack In The Red Sea Damages Its Stern
Yemen’s Houthi group have sunk a second commercial vessel in the Red Sea.
The incident reported by the UKMTO highlights the continued threat posed by Houthi military actions in the region.
The MV Tutor, a Greek-owned coal carrier, was targeted in a coordinated attack on June 12, 2024.
According to reports from the UKMTO and other sources, the ship was initially hit by missiles before being targeted by an explosive-laden remote-controlled boat.
The attack damaged the vessel significantly, causing it to take on water.
Efforts to save the vessel were ineffective, and it was reportedly sunk at 14’19’N 041’14’E in the Southern Red Sea.
Unfortunately, one Filipino crew member who was in the engine room during the attack is still missing and is presumed dead.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group safely evacuated the remaining 21 crew members.
The Houthi attacks are part of a broader campaign by the Iran-aligned Houthis, who use solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza to justify their actions.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have targeted numerous commercial vessels and interrupted global trade routes, forcing shipping companies to reroute ships away from the Suez Canal.
The MV Tutor’s sinking follows a similar incident with the US-owned bulk carrier Rubymar.
These actions have not only claimed the lives of innocent mariners but also severely impacted global trade, causing delays and increased costs.
US and British forces conducted strikes on Houthi bases near Hodeidah International Airport and Kamaran Island, which are believed to be vital locations used by the Houthis to launch maritime attacks.
The international community led by the US and UK have strongly condemned the Houthi attacks as acts of terrorism, stating that they risk the lives of innocent civilians performing their duties on the assigned ships.
Efforts to stabilize the region and safeguard maritime trade continue amid escalating tensions and threats posed by Houthi militants.
