Höegh Evi Partners With Port-La Nouvelle To Develop Floating Hydrogen Terminal In Europe
Höegh Evi, a leader in marine energy infrastructure, has partnered with Port-La Nouvelle to develop a floating terminal that will provide hydrogen to the region.
The hydrogen will be imported from key production areas, including the Middle East, North Africa, and the Americas, helping meet Europe’s expanding energy demands while supporting the green energy transition.
Port-La Nouvelle, with its location and existing marine infrastructure, is well-positioned to become a major hub for hydrogen imports.
Erik Nyheim, President and CEO of Höegh Evi, shared that their expertise in floating terminals will allow Europe to import large amounts of hydrogen by the end of the decade.
The initiative will also help to develop the Occitanie region’s energy and industrial sectors. It will connect Port-La Nouvelle to important hydrogen transport networks in partnership with European projects like HySoW Hydrogen and Teréga, a gas pipeline operator.
This will increase the region’s attractiveness to investors and help generate new jobs.
Hans Kerstens, CEO of SEMOP Port-La Nouvelle, discussed the port’s future investments, which are heavily focused on renewable energy.
He stated the port’s passion for accepting new types of trade, particularly hydrogen, and expressed a desire to collaborate with Höegh Evi to transform Port-La Nouvelle into Europe’s main hydrogen gateway in the Mediterranean.
By 2030, the terminal is expected to handle up to 210,000 tons of hydrogen per year, depending on the condition of France’s hydrogen pipeline. The partners are now assessing the feasibility and design of the port’s terminal infrastructure.
