HII Wins $9.6 Billion Contract To Build 3 Amphibious Ships For U.S. Navy
HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding company has been granted a $9.6 billion contract to build three San Antonio-class (LPD 17) amphibious ships and a contract modification for the next America-class (LHA 6) large-deck amphibious ship.
This multi-ship procurement deal is the first of its kind for amphibious vessels making the way to build LPDs 33, 34, 35, and LHA 10 for the US Navy.
According to company officials, this important contract will provide stability for Ingalls shipbuilders and for the entire community.
Kari Wilkinson, President of Ingalls, talked about the importance of the deal, stating that it supports the joint objective of the United States Navy and Marine Corps to maintain a fleet of at least 31 amphibious ships.
Currently, over half of Ingalls’ workforce is involved in the construction of amphibious ships, with the support of 650 supplier partners from 39 states.
Ingalls has already delivered 13 San Antonio-class ships and 15 large-deck amphibious ships to the United States Navy, establishing its position as a major contributor to the country’s defense infrastructure.
Ingalls is currently building two Flight II LPDs, Harrisburg (LPD 30) and Pittsburgh (LPD 31), along with ongoing construction on the LHA-class ships Bougainville (LHA 8) and Fallujah (LHA 9).
Earlier this year, Ingalls received a contract modification to design and build Philadelphia (LPD 32), the 16th ship in the San Antonio class.
The San Antonio and LHA-class ships, known for their survivability and adaptability, help the US military respond quickly to crises, whether in combat, deterrence, or humanitarian missions.
