French Chocolate Firm To Launch 200-TEU Eco-Friendly Cargo Ship By 2027
Grain de Sail, a French company dedicated to sustainable shipping and organic food production, has unveiled plans for the Grain de Sail III, a new modern sailing cargo ship scheduled to launch in 2027.
This new vessel will strengthen the company’s commitment to decarbonized maritime logistics and help it expand its commercial operations in the United States and Europe.
Grain de Sail, founded in 2013 as a coffee roaster and chocolatier, has grown to become a leader in environmentally responsible shipping solutions.
The Grain de Sail III is a pure sailing containership capable of transporting 200 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) and up to 3,000 metric tons of goods. It is intended to do transatlantic voyages in around 13 days.
The first two sailing cargo vessels, a 24-meter aluminium hull model launched in 2020 and a larger 52-meter ship named Grain de Sail II, which completed its first journey to New York in March, have laid the groundwork for the newest addition.
Grain de Sail III is expected to greatly improve the company’s ability to import raw goods like cocoa.
Oliver Barreau, Co-Founder and President of Grain de Sail, highlighted the importance of this new ship in the company’s shift to sustainable shipping.
He said that the Grain de Sail III reflects their desire to lead in the decarbonized maritime transportation industry.
The ship will accomplish over 90 percent decarbonization because of its three masts and 4,000 square meters of sail area. Its design will allow it to travel important marine routes, such as under major bridges and across the Panama Canal.
The Grain de Sail III will have retractable daggerboards to improve upwind speed while minimizing dock draft.
The ship will also feature modern hydrogenation technology, allowing it to produce decarbonized energy on board. A wood pellet boiler will also supply heating and hot water for the crew, ensuring their comfort on extended excursions.
