China has launched the first of eight Hangor-class submarines for Pakistan, marking an important milestone in their bilateral military cooperation.

The launch ceremony was held at Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group’s Shuangliu Base and was attended by Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf.

According to the agreement between China and Pakistan, Beijing will provide Pakistan with eight cutting-edge submarines.

Four of these submarines will be built by Wachung Shipbuilding Industry Group, and the remaining four will be built by Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works under a Transfer of Technology deal.

The Hangor-class submarines have superior stealth capabilities.

They will be outfitted with cutting-edge weaponry and sensors, allowing them to operate successfully in multi-threat settings and engage targets at long ranges.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf emphasised the importance of maritime security in today’s geopolitical context and reaffirmed the Pakistan Navy’s commitment to regional peace and stability.

He stated that the Hangor class submarines project will boost Pakistan and China’s long-standing friendship while demonstrating their robust military cooperation.

This launch comes after Pakistan began building its sixth Hangor-class submarine at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering works in February.

Pakistan and China have close military ties, with Pakistan often acquiring armaments from China.

Last year, the Pakistan Navy received two Chinese Type 054 A/P frigates, with a contract for four multi-role frigates signed in 2018.

China is making significant investments in Pakistan through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The CPEC aims to improve trade channels and increase Pakistan’s economy through infrastructure and energy projects, with over $65 billion invested since its inception in 2013.

China has also provided financial support to Pakistan during times of economic crisis.
