The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for two autonomous technologies developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.

The new technologies are designed to improve safety and efficiency in ammonia-fueled vessels.

The two technologies are an unmanned ammonia engine room and an AI Safety Package for ammonia-powered ships.

These developments are part of a cooperative initiative between ABS and HD Hyundai, which focuses on advancing autonomous systems for maritime applications.

The Unmanned Ammonia Engine Room has remote propulsion control and gas safety technology, allowing periodic unmanned monitoring from a centralized control station on the ship’s navigation bridge.

The system can automatically detect and fix mechanical issues, reducing the requirement for crew presence in possibly dangerous areas.

The AI Safety Package includes advanced artificial intelligence for machinery and safety management.

It is part of HD Hyundai’s Integrated Safety Control Solution (HiCAMS) and Condition Diagnosis Solution (HiCBM), designed to provide immediate assistance in case of an engine room fire.

Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of ABS, stated that these technologies represent major developments in the application of autonomous systems to ship design.

He added that these systems are built on sensors, images, networking, and machine learning and are fully integrated with vessel infrastructure.

According to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, the new technologies aim to improve crew safety by limiting their exposure to engine room risks and improving remote monitoring capabilities.

The company believes that these developments will become essential features in future ammonia-fueled ship projects, addressing the growing demand for safer, environmentally friendly vessels.
