The search for 5 missing workers is an immediate and overriding priority after the Prospector 5 jack-up rig sank off Gabon.

Borr Drilling stated the 2014-built rig lost stability and sank at about 20:37 local time on October 24, 2026, following a suspected ‘punch-through’ during pre-drilling jacking operations.

Of the 115 people on board, only 110 were accounted for and were brought ashore in Gabon for medical care and support.

The Gabonese government’s official reports and news channels listed all 5 workers as missing. The Borr-owned rig was operating under contract to BW Energy and had not yet started drilling.

It was conducting jacking operations to participate in BW Energy’s planned drilling campaign at the Dussafu Marine license. BW Energy confirmed production at the adjacent MaBoMo facility continued without disruption, as the rig had not yet begun operations.

BW Energy confirmed no damage to the MaBoMo facility and no spillage of harmful substances during the rig sinking. Gabonese authorities noted no pollution in the area but pledged to maintain ongoing environmental surveillance. The authorities initiated a technical investigation to determine the circumstances of the sinking.

Previously, the rig owner said that the company is in contact with the families of the missing workers. The Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, NJ Ayuk, expressed solidarity, prayers, and support for the missing workers and their families.

He spoke on behalf of the African energy industry to show support for Gabon, BW Energy, Borr Drilling, and every affected family.

As of October 26, search and rescue teams are still looking for 5 missing people. Borr Drilling confirms coordination of the response team with local authorities to investigate the situation and continue the rescue operations, including marine and navy search.
