Oil And Gas Leak Spotted Near Garden Island Bay Production Facility
An oil and gas mixture has been spotted near the Garden Island Bay Production Facility in Plaquemines Parish, located southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Coast Guard, the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office (LOSCO) and operator Spectrum OpCo, LLC, have activated a Unified Command to manage the response efforts following the spill, which was found on April 26, 2025.
The spill was confirmed after an overflight by an aircrew from the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office, which detected the presence of crude oil in the marsh environment near the operator’s well.
The responsible company, Spectrum OpCo, LLC, is following its federal and state-approved emergency oil spill response plan to address the situation.
In coordination with the Unified Command, response resources have been organised through Forefront Emergency Management, along with local Oil Spill Removal Organisations like Environmental Safety & Health Consulting Services, Inc. and Clean Gulf Associates.
These teams are working to contain and mitigate the impact of the spill.
Daily overflight assessments are scheduled to monitor the spill and ensure the response remains effective.
So far, no injuries or wildlife impacts have been reported. The authorities are working closely to safeguard the environment and public health.
The cause of the spill is currently under investigation.
Mariners are urged to report any sightings of oil in the area to the Coast Guard Sector New Orleans at 504-365-2200.
If anyone observes wildlife affected by the oil, they are advised to report it to the Wildlife Hotline at 832-514-9663.
