Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), Goa, has become the first government autonomous body and the first major port in India to secure Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN) authorisation for a private 5G network. The authorisation, secured in September 2026, marks a significant step towards the adoption of next-generation digital technologies in port operations.

The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ focus on digitisation, process optimisation and improving operational efficiency across the maritime sector. The proposed private 5G network is expected to support technology-driven port operations and strengthen the digital infrastructure at Mormugao Port.

To facilitate the implementation of the project, MPA has engaged a consultancy agency to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The port authority has also issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify suitable system integrators and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The process of conducting Proof of Concept (PoC) trials is currently underway.

The proposed network is expected to provide high-speed connectivity, low latency and reliable communication within the port premises. A dedicated private network could support operational requirements in the port’s industrial environment while enabling greater control over network management and the handling of operational data.

MPA is preparing an implementation plan to explore the use of private 5G technology across key operational areas, including smart port operations, automated logistics and cargo tracking. Potential applications include real-time monitoring, drone-based surveillance, smart sensors and technology-enabled management of port infrastructure.

The adoption of these technologies is expected to support improved operational visibility, more efficient cargo movement and better coordination of port activities. The proposed network could also facilitate the integration of connected devices and digital systems for monitoring and managing maritime operations.

The initiative represents a step towards modernising port infrastructure through advanced communication technologies. As the project progresses through the planning and trial stages, it could provide a reference for other major ports exploring private 5G networks to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen their digital capabilities.

Through this initiative, Mormugao Port Authority aims to advance the use of next-generation technology in maritime logistics and contribute to the broader digital transformation of India’s port sector.
