Maritime Deaths Involving EU-Registered Vessels Rose To 22 In 2025, Eurostat Report Suggests
Twenty-two fatalities were recorded worldwide in maritime accidents involving EU-registered vessels in 2025, which is seven more than in 2024.
According to a Eurostat maritime safety dataset report from 27 October, 2026, three people died in EU territorial waters in accidents involving ships registered outside the EU. From 2021 to 2025, 27 people died per year on average in accidents that involved EU-registered vessels.
Ten of the 22 deaths in 2025 were witnessed in the Atlantic Ocean, the European Union states. Nineteen of the 22 were seafarers. The other three deaths were documented in roles as dock workers, service personnel, inspectors, and pilots.
Two of them happened in the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea each. One of them was recorded in the Baltic Sea. Five other deaths were recorded in other parts of the world, whereas the location of two is not known.
The cause of most of these deaths, including eight casualties, was cargo and fishing vessels. Recreational ships, passenger vessels, and service ships recorded two deaths each. In 2025, no passenger deaths were recorded.
The figures come from the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), which records reported maritime accidents and fatalities from EU countries, Iceland and Norway.
The Cyprus Mail stated, using the EMSA statistics, that there were 19 deaths per year in accidents relating to EU-registered ships between 2020 and 2024. 16 fatalities were recorded in 2020, which rose to 29 in 2022. This rise was seen after maritime activity restarted following the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2023, the number of fatalities fell to 11, before increasing again in 2024.
