India’s Mundra Port Operations Resume As Container Yard Operators Call Off 13-Day Strike

Operations have resumed at India’s Mundra Port after yard operators ended their strike, which continued for 13 days, piling up 5000 empty containers at the facility, creating congestion, backlogs and truck queues which will take days to clear up.

The strike, which began on August 28, 2026, impacted the entire supply chain, from shipping companies to freight forwarders.

The Mundra Empty Container Yards & Allied Services Provider Association (MECYASA) stopped its operations to protest against a new policy of the Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone.

Under the directive, which was to come into effect on September 1, shipping lines could keep the empty containers in the yards within the boundaries of the Port’s Special Economic Zone.

Independent yard operators outside the port were blocked from taking in containers, threatening their business.

The Adani Ports Special Economic Zone, or APSEZ, said that the move was necessary to boost port security, decrease congestion at the nearby highways and reduce the turnaround time for trucks.

However, the strike continued, and 1,500 truck transporters also joined it in support, halting empty-container pickups across the port, leading to a build-up of thousands of empty containers in the port premises.

Major shipping companies like MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, ONE and CMA CGM issued statements to their customers as the strike delayed shipments from the port.

APSEZ has now decided to build its own facility at the port to handle storage, repairs, maintenance and inspections of empty containers under one roof to reduce operational costs.
