The Indian Navy tank landing ship INS Kesari suffered water ingress while berthed at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, India, the Navy said.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, October 31, 2026. According to the Navy, no injuries or loss of life have been reported, and pumping operations were underway when it issued its statement. A spokesperson of the Eastern Naval Command issued the statement, which the Navy posted on X.

The Navy has not said how much water entered, which compartments were affected, or what caused the ingress. A Board of Inquiry is to be constituted to determine the exact cause, officials said.

The real cause can be established only after the ship is dry docked and a technical investigation is carried out, a naval source said.

INS Kesari, a Shardul-class Landing Ship Tank (Large), was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata, India, and commissioned on April 5, 2008. The 125-meter ship displaces 5,650 tonnes and is designed for amphibious warfare, troop transport and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. It is attached to the Eastern Naval Command.

In May 2020, the ship was deployed for Mission Sagar, delivering Covid-19 relief to Maldives, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles. An earlier INS Kesari landing ship served in the Navy from 1975 to 1999.
