The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved a clearance worth over ₹40,000 crore to build warships for the Indian Navy.

Contracts for 8 Next-Generation Corvettes are expected to be signed with two shipyards within the next few days. Government officials stated that Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) are to build the warships.

The Cabinet Committee on Security, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleared the proposal in a meeting held on October 28, 2026.

The warships will have a displacement of around 2,000 tonnes, with a speed of about 30 knots, featuring an in-house design developed by the Indian Navy.

The DAC first cleared the programme on June 6, 2022. With the approved proposal, the Indian Navy expects to get the first ship delivery by 2030.

The vessels will boost the Navy’s operational capabilities and strengthen its maritime security missions across the maritime zones.

According to the Economic Times, the vessels are expected to boost domestic shipbuilding capabilities and strengthen the country’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The project will contribute to advancing the Government project of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and its Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Ministry of Defence earlier stated that the vessels will function as versatile platforms for various roles such as deterrence, surveillance missions, escort operations, Surface Action Group (SAG) operations, Search & Attack and Coastal Defence.

The project will prove vital to counter any maritime security challenges in the essential maritime zones.
