Indian Navy Sail Training Ship INS Sudarshini Calls At Malta’s Historic Port Valletta During Transoceanic Voyage

The Indian Navy sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at the historic port of Valletta on 12 March as part of its 22,000-nautical-mile transoceanic expedition, Lokayan-26.

According to an official release from India’s defence authorities, the port call is a key part of the journey, which aims to promote maritime cooperation, professional exchanges and cultural interaction during the voyage.

The ship reached Valletta after passing through the Suez Canal and making a recent stop at Alexandria.

The expedition began from Kochi on 20 January 2026 and is now in its second month. In total, the voyage will cover about 22,000 nautical miles across several regions.

Sail training ships like INS Sudarshini are used to train naval personnel in traditional seamanship while also representing the country during overseas port visits.

After arriving in Malta, the ship’s Commanding Officer met Indian High Commissioner Rachita Bhandari. Officials said the meeting focused on the role of the Indian Navy in strengthening relations between the two countries.

The High Commissioner said the visit supports the vision of MAHASAGAR, which aims to increase maritime cooperation and people-to-people connections.

During the port stay, the crew will hold professional interactions and courtesy meetings with the Armed Forces of Malta to strengthen cooperation between the two sides.

The ship will also host outreach activities. A guided “Open Ship” programme will allow schoolchildren and members of the Indian community in Malta to visit the vessel and learn about naval traditions and life at sea.

After leaving Malta, INS Sudarshini will sail to the French coast to take part in the Escale à Sète maritime festival. The event brings together tall ships from different countries, and the Indian naval vessel will represent India at the gathering.

The Lokayan-26 voyage is part of the Indian Navy’s efforts to build stronger international connections through training voyages, naval cooperation and cultural exchanges.

As the mission continues, INS Sudarshini will make more port visits while carrying out its training role and representing India abroad.
