Indian Navy Adds Fifth Of 8 Shallow Water Anti-Submarine Warship With Over 80% Indigenous Content
INS Amini, the latest anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW SWC) from Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), has joined the Indian Navy after a handover at Kattupalli in Tamil Nadu on November 5, 2026.
The warship is the fifth of the eight ASW SWCs being built by the Kolkata-based shipyard for the Indian Navy.
The Indian Navy announced the delivery in a post on the social media platform X, while the Ministry of Defence said that the vessel would strengthen the Navy’s anti-submarine, coastal surveillance and mine-laying capabilities.
According to reports, Amini measures about 77.6 metres in length and has a shallow draught of around 2.7 metres.
Marine diesel engines coupled with waterjets power the vessel, thereby giving it better manoeuvrability in coastal waters.
Its underwater arsenal includes light torpedoes, rocket launchers made in India for anti-submarine use, and modern sonars. Additionally, it has a 30 mm naval gun and a Combat Management System.
Construction followed the Indian Register of Shipping classification rules, and more than 80% of the vessel is made in India.
The vessel has been named after Amini Island in Lakshadweep and it was launched on November 16, 2023.
Such craft are meant to work in shallow waters near ports and harbours, where larger warships find it difficult to operate and where submarines can still pose a threat.
Another eight ASW SWCs are being built by Cochin Shipyard under the same program for the Navy, taking the total to 16.
GRSE had said earlier this year that it expects to complete its part of the project during the financial year 2026-27.
