India And Denmark Reaffirm Bilateral Maritime Ties With Focus On Green Shipping
India and Denmark confirm their bilateral maritime cooperation with a focus on priority areas like green shipping and sustainable development of the international maritime industry.
The two countries held a discussion to strengthen their years-old alliance. India and Denmark spoke about expanding their cooperation in maritime developments.
India’s Director General of Maritime Administration conducted the bilateral meeting with Denmark’s Minister for Business and Competitiveness in Mumbai, India. Representatives from both sides spoke extensively on topics of maritime decarbonization, ship recycling, and mariners’ training and skill development, shipbuilding, green shipping, regulatory cooperation, and sustainable development.
The talk especially focused on the importance of developing practical initiatives and maintaining strong technical collaboration.
According to the National Maritime Foundation, the two countries are in different positions in the global maritime economy. This asymmetric alignment makes their consistent cooperation on green shipping remarkable.
The National Maritime Foundation dates their cooperation back to January 2019. The maritime relations between India and Denmark began when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between India and Denmark. In 2022, the MoU was revised, and its scope was widened with the Centre of Excellence in India. The alliance between the countries was furthered after the India-Denmark Green Strategic Partnership was established in 2020.
The meeting builds on earlier agreements. In June 2025, India’s Union Minister met Denmark’s Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, Morten Bødskov, in Copenhagen.
According to The Tribune, the meeting highlighted a 2024 memorandum on maritime affairs about the Centre of Excellence in green shipping. Sonowal and his Danish counterpart agreed that the Centre would help in the promotion of the green transition in India’s maritime sector.
In June 2025, India proposed that the National Centre and the Danish Maritime Authority begin joint work on certifications and collaborative research on energy efficiency technologies, according to The Tribune. In February 2025, Denmark announced an initiative by Green Transition Alliance India to work on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and green fuels.
India and Denmark have a pre-established foundation of cooperation in the maritime sector. Their latest reaffirmation strengthens Indo-Danish aspirations in addressing challenges and working towards more maritime developments.
