IMO Secretary-General Sets His Priorities For 2026 New Year Message
International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has emphasized key items on the IMO’s upcoming agenda.
In a video message, Secretary-General Dominguez said:
โAs we start 2026, Iโฏwould like to focus on something simple:โฏgetting things done. At IMO, this is the year of implementation; moving from plans to concrete actions and measurable progress, reflected in our world maritime theme:โฏโFrom Policy to Practice โ Powering Maritime Excellence.โ
โSeafarers.โฏNearly twoโฏmillionโฏworkโฏat sea.โฏRecognizing that training needs to keep up with the newโฏrealitiesโฏof the industry,โฏwe will startโฏa major update of theโฏSTCW Conventionโฏโ including emerging technologies, new fuels and changing requirements.
โOn decarbonization, we areโฏmovingโฏahead with efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions from the sector by or around 2050. Stay tuned for furtherโฏdevelopments.
โWhen it comes to technology,โฏall eyes will be on the finalization of theโฏautonomousโฏshipsโฏcode.
โAnd of course,โฏIMO will continue supporting the implementation of the High Seas Treatyโฏas it enters into force this month,โฏunderlying our global commitmentโฏto protectโฏthe ocean andโฏbiodiversity.
โI wish you all a successful 2026 andโฏdoโฏnotโฏforget to check outโฏour new logo!โ
