IMO Secretary General Praises India’s Key Role In Green Shipping & Crew Welfare

International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has praised India for its contributions to sustainable shipping, maritime security and seafarer welfare. His visit to India focused on strengthening collaboration between the IMO and the country’s maritime sector.

On the final day of his three-day visit, Dominguez met with officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) in New Delhi.

The discussions with MoPSW Secretary T.K. Ramachandran and other senior government officials focused on the development of the maritime sector, green shipping, sustainable port development and advanced technologies.

Dominguez acknowledged India’s role in global shipping and its commitment to environmental responsibility. He also reaffirmed the organisation’s support for India’s maritime initiatives, including skill development for seafarers and eco-friendly port modernisation.

During the meeting, Dominguez discussed the importance of research and development in maritime sustainability. He pointed out the need for international cooperation to fasten the adoption of cleaner fuels, modern technologies, and efficient shipping practices.

Officials reported that he appreciated India’s efforts in ship recycling and sustainable port management. He also recognised the Indian Navy’s role in ensuring maritime security in the Indian Ocean, and their contributions to protect sea routes and maintain stability in the region.

Apart from discussion in Delhi, Dominguez attended the 2025 Green Shipping Conclave at the Maritime Training Institute in Powai, Mumbai. He interacted with maritime stakeholders, seafarers, and industry leaders, discussing the need for innovation in maritime operations.

He also visited the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and participated in policy discussions with various stakeholders. At local maritime institutions, he addressed seafarers, acknowledging India’s contribution to the global shipping workforce.

Officials say that Dominguez recognised India’s position as a major maritime nation with a long seafaring heritage. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with Indian maritime leaders to enhance workforce training, create green opportunities, and make shipping more sustainable.
