Human Remains Found On Tanker Matching Drone Hit Wine Trader In Bulgaria
Severely damaged human remains have been found aboard a chemical tanker that matches the drone-hit Wine Trader, Bulgarian prosecutors have said.
The prosecutor’s office in Varna said in a statement that the remains were discovered during debris-clearing, while the vessel was being repaired in Bulgaria. It has ordered DNA tests to identify the victims.
The prosecutors did not name the ship but said it sails under the San Marino flag, as does the Wine Trader. The remains are in such a state that the number of victims cannot be fixed, though a Bulgarian law enforcement source told AFP it was most likely six.
Of the 12 people on the Wine Trader, 7 went missing and 5 were pulled out alive after the October 15 attack, which took place roughly 24 km to the southeast of Sulina.
The tanker was empty at the time, as per Romania’s naval authority. Romanian President said a drone was behind the damage, and both countries have opened probes.
AFP reported that at least 9 merchant ships have come under drone attacks off Romania and Bulgaria since early October, leaving 34 people dead or missing. Bulgaria has also sought a NATO deployment of warplanes and counter-drone equipment.
The Sulina canal near which the tanker was anchored links the Danube to the Black Sea, and Ukraine uses it as an export route while Russia attacks its ports.
