Hidden Cameras Found In Women’s Showers Aboard Australian Navy Ship
Cameras have been found in the cabins of the Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Leeuwin, in Cairns, Queensland, according to the Australian Defense Force.
Senator Jacqui Lambie, a former veteran and defense lawyer, said in Parliament that she received information from naval personnel about hidden cameras in the female sailors’ shower rooms.
The Defense Department has not said whether the concealed cameras were found in female-only spaces, and the matter has been referred to the Joint Military Police Unit.
Lambie also informed the Senate that the issue occurred recently and, due to complaints, the ship did not sail, as an investigation has been opened to catch the culprits.
Sailors are disturbed as there are claims that the recorded footage might have been uploaded online before the disturbing discovery in the female shower areas.
Lambie said that the naval authority has to answer for this. She said that how many female sailors’ most private moments might have been recorded, and how much of the footage has been published online, needs to be ascertained, and measures must be taken to correct this.
On Wednesday, the defense department said that a recording device was found on the ship but did not go into details. The department statement said that it is a serious matter and is completely unacceptable. Investigation is ongoing, and all support is being provided to the ship’s crew members, as their welfare remains the top priority.
Vice Adm Buckley said that it was an act of sexual violence and one of the most despicable betrayals of trust, and added that the navy would conduct a thorough check of all the bathrooms across all the vessels in the fleet.
The defence minister, Richard Marles, called the incident reprehensible and invasive, adding that the culprits would be punished and that there is no room for such behaviour in the Australian Defense Force.
