DP World Targets Canada’s Port of Churchill To Cut Shipping Times To Europe by 3 Days
Dubai-based DP World has signed an agreement with Arctic Gateway, the operator of Canada’s Port of Churchill, along with Hudson Bay Railway and CentrePort, to develop a trade corridor, boost logistics at the northern Canadian port, bypass geopolitical bottlenecks and accelerate trade to Europe.
This comes as the provincial and federal governments are looking for ways to connect the port to the larger DP World’s global network.
According to the MOU, efforts would be taken to connect Manitoba and the manufacturing hubs in the central part of Canada with the Port of Churchill through the DP World Network, along with connections between Hudson Bay Railway and the Inland Logistics Facility of CentrePoint.
The deal comes as Canada tries to build new export corridors, trade routes, strengthen supply chains and expand to overseas markets.
Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, said that Canada is building resilient trade corridors which would open Canadian companies to worldwide markets through this agreement, which would create new opportunities for Canadian exporters.
The Port of Churchill has made significant investments to upgrade its infrastructure to handle a diverse range of commodities such as minerals, grain, and potash, and provide a vital location for shipping goods manufactured in the north to the Nunavut First Peoples community.
The port handled its first grain shipment since 2020, in September 2026, when 30,000 tonnes of wheat from Saskatchewan-based AGT Foods was loaded and shipped to Europe.
The operator said that it is in talks to drive up private sector investments, while emphasizing that the port can support operations all year round, with the help of ice-strengthened ships.
In the past few years, more than 1000 companies have built their presence in the region, and there is over 3.5 million square feet of industrial space under construction in the last 8 years.
DP World is working to increase its reach across Canada. Currently, it handles over a million TEUs and operates at Port Rupert in the west and is expanding operations at the Port of Montreal.
The Port of Churchill has 4 deep-sea berths that can accommodate Panamax-sized ships and a grain terminal to store up to 140,000 tonnes. It also has a minerals storage capacity of 30,000 tonnes.
