CMA CGM Ship Hit By Missile In Strait Of Hormuz To Be Scrapped, Says Company CEO
A CMA CGM container vessel, San Antonio, struck by a missile in the Hormuz in May, is going to be scrapped, the chief executive of the company said in a business conference in France.
According to CMA CGM’s Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saade, the container ship, which is one of the largest in the world, was so badly damaged that there is no option but to dismantle it since repairing it would not be economically feasible.
CMA CGM San Antonio, which became the target of attack in the US-Iran war, was stranded in the Hormuz Strait for weeks and has been escorted to safety now.
The crew members of the ship who were injured during the attack were also rescued.
The missile attack on the vessel was one of the many such strikes on commercial ships in the strategic waterway during the peak of hostilities between Washington and Tehran.
The Strait of Hormuz, which handles 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply, was closed to shipping by Iran after the U.S and Israel launched an attack on the Islamic Republic on February 28, 2026, which started the U.S-Iran war.
Even after signing the interim Peace agreement, America and Iran cannot agree on the Hormuz issue, as the former wants no tolls or maritime service fees to be imposed, which the latter claims to be its natural right.
The decision by the container shipping giant to scrap the ship reflects the financial costs of war facing shipping companies which continue to operate in the region.
CMA CGM San Antonio is one of the most sophisticated container ships in the world, and its loss would be a major blow to the French shipping group.
Though the MOU has been signed between Iran and the U.S, the situation continues to remain tense since the ceasefire was broken and missiles were exchanged between both parties after an unknown projectile hit the ship Ever Lovely.
