Cargo Ship AS Dream Sinks 90 Nautical Miles Off Cyprus As Passing MSC Vessel Rescues All 10 Crew
Ten crew members were rescued after a Tanzanian-flagged cargo ship sank about 90 nautical miles west of Paphos.
Cyprus authorities coordinated an operation to rescue the crew members after the vessel sank within the Republic of Cyprus’ search and rescue region on the evening of October 30. They identified the merchant ship as AS Dream. The JRCC launched a rescue operation, urging a helicopter and a police vessel to be dispatched to the area. A nearby Panama-flagged merchant ship, the MSC Hannah III, was also called to assist.
Cyprus’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre received an alert at 20:15, triggering a search and rescue operation under the Nearchos plan, the Cyprus Mail reports.
The crew comprised nine Indian nationals and one Cameroonian. Under JRCC Larnaca’s coordination, they were initially brought safely to the police launch Pentadaktylos. They were eventually taken to Limassol port.
Ambulance personnel and paramedics examined the ten survivors and found them in good health on arrival. The crew members were later sent over to the care of their relevant state authorities. The embassies concerned were notified and are handling the case through diplomatic channels.
As of November 2, 2026, no cause for the sinking has been reported yet. Details about the vessel’s owner or its routes are not known. Cypriot authorities have not notified of any ongoing investigation into the case. The cause of the latest sinking has not been disclosed.
According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Database, the Tanzanian-flagged ship AS Dream was linked to an abandonment case from September 2025. It was reported as an unresolved case that occurred in Ashdod, Israel.
Eight seafarers from Azerbaijan, Georgia, India, and Turkey were aboard during the abandonment. In September 2026, Tanzania’s maritime administration said it was seeking an updated status from the ITF, as per the ILO Database. The case remains unresolved as per the latest update on October 28, 2026.
