U.S Navy plans to ask the maritime industry companies about ways to integrate ‘Super Intelligence’ Tools to help engineers handle one of the most difficult issues regarding submarine design and accommodation of equipment within the confined hull space while maintaining performance and stability.

A notice regarding the same has been issued by the Naval Sea Systems Command’s Director, Submarine Programs through the SSN (X) Program Office and an official document calling for proposals could begin next week.

U.S Navy started using the term Super Intelligence as a substitute for Artificial Intelligence after U.S President Donald Trump announced to retire the latter and a notice for its replacement was issued in October,

The service has urged companies who would like to be selected as a contractor through a competition to register their interest by November 6, 2026.

Through this initiative, the U.S Navy wants to develop a software to strategically rearrange the complex systems inside its SSN (X) attack submarine. Even small changes in the internal structure could impact the overall balance and buoyancy of the submarine.

The Navy wants competing companies to develop a software which would determine how major systems would be distributed inside the submarine without compromising on efficiency and functionality.

Maintaining hydrostatic balance is one of the major engineering problems for designers as a submerged vessel has to maintain a fine relation between its weight and buoyancy.

Its centre of gravity and longitudinal trim also ensure how it remains underwater and inadequately placed equipment could disrupt the delicate balance.

The design should take into account a nuclear propulsion plant, a sophisticated weapons system, sensors and supporting machinery. Additionally, crew spaces need to be smartly accommodated.

Companies have been asked to provide non-propriety expressions of interest regarding their relevant expertise.

Also, the navy wants to categorise them as traditional or non-traditional defense contractors. However, the notice does not mention anything about investments or a projected development schedule.

Under the SSN (X) program, the navy plans to inculcate the capabilities of different submarines in its fleet, such as the speed and weapon capacity of Seawolf-class and the acoustic discretion and sensor performance of the Virginia-class submarines.

According to sources, the displacement of the new submarine underwater would be around 10,100 tons, making it bigger than the Virginia-class which displaces 7800 tons.

It remains to be seen how much ‘Super Intelligence’ will influence the submarine’s final design which is expected to become clear in the competition that could be held next week.
