9,700 Ton US Navy Destroyer Enters Spanish Dry Dock In A First For Forward Deployed Ships
9,700 Ton US Navy Destroyer USS Arleigh Burke has entered a dry dock in Spain for maintenance this week, the US Navy announced. It is the first such docking in the 6th Fleet’s area of operations, at Navantia’s shipyard in Cadiz, and the first overhaul of its kind for Europe-based, forward-deployed US Navy destroyers.
The Navy said the work is meant to improve the material readiness and maintenance capability of its forward-deployed warships. It is working closely with the ship’s crew, civilian personnel and its industry partner Navantia.
The Navy has not disclosed the full list of repairs, the cost or the expected completion date. The ship will undergo planned maintenance and modernisation during the period. It last operated in the Mediterranean Sea.
The commander of the US 6th Fleet called the dry docking a major milestone in expanding the Navy’s forward-deployed maintenance capabilities in Europe.
The announcement comes amid growing operational pressure on the US Navy. Some sources link the program to the ongoing US-Iran war, but the Navy has not confirmed that. It has not cited combat damage, the war or any specific operational need for the overhaul.
The work could also build a longer-term relationship between Spain’s ship repair industry and the US Navy. It allows maintenance to be done closer to the ship’s homeport and area of operation and gives Europe-based US destroyers a framework for future dry-dock maintenance.
Navantia is a Spanish shipbuilding and naval maintenance company. It has worked with US Navy ships stationed at Rota since 2013. In January 2021, it announced a maintenance contract covering Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and other US Navy ships deployed at Rota. The contract runs through January 2028 and has a maximum value of €822.4 million.
