64 U.S Navy Sailors Fall Ill After Inhaling Exhaust Fumes From Submarine USS Nebraska
Dozens of U.S Navy sailors fell ill after they were exposed to diesel exhaust fumes from the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Nebraska on June 22, 2026.
According to the Navy, about 64 service members experienced coughing, lightheadedness, headaches, dizziness, and nausea on a routine pier shift at the Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Silverdale, Washington.
Six sailors suffered from breathing problems and were admitted in the hospital but were later released.
The affected members were close to a backup diesel generator when the poisoning occurred, along with severe irritation in the eyes, throat and nose.
The cause of the incident has not been revealed yet, and the navy is working to identify the issue.
The navy said that the diesel generator doesn’t affect the submarine’s nuclear reactor when it is running and that the submarine remains fully mission capable.
USS Nebraska is 170 m long, 13 m wide and has a 12 m draft. Commissioned in 1993, it is nicknamed the Big Red and carries Trident Ballistic Missiles.
The submarine can attain speeds of over 25 knots and boasts a displacement of 19,050 when submerged. As of 2013, it had completed 62 patrols in its 20 years of service and was given the Battle E Award for Submarine Squadron 17.
