24 shipping containers fell overboard from two cargo ships off the Isle of Wight, per the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The incident occurred on Thursday night as Storm Goretti brought strong winds and powerful waves to the English Channel and the Solent, disrupting ferry and shipping operations in the region.

Around 11:10 pm, a ship reported losing an unspecified number of containers close to Nab Tower, later stating that 17 were lost.

At 11:55 p.m, another vessel informed the authorities about losing atleast 7 emply container 16 nm southwest of St Catherine’s Point. These containers, however, are believed to have gone down.

Authorities said that if anybody finds the floating containers, they must report them to the Solent Coastguard on 0344 382 0560 or on VHF radio.

Non-perishable cargo found on the coast must be reported to the ‘Receiver of Wreck’ within 28 days.

Per an MCA spokesperson, 6 shipping containers were found by an HM Coastguard aircraft, southeast of the Isle of Wight.

The Coastguard added that recovering the lost containers is the responsibility of the vessel operators, who are cooperating with the HM Coastguard and the salvors.

Cargo lists are being checked to determine the content of the lost containers, to ensure they pose no harm to the marine environment.

HM Coastguard sent another aircraft to monitor the situation, as navigational warnings have been issued to discourage people from going out into the waters.
