11 Indian Seafarers Injured After Attack On Commercial Tanker In Strait of Hormuz
An attack on the Panama-flagged MT On Peace by an unverified projectile left eleven Indian crew members injured in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting calls from New Delhi to end shipping attacks.
On October 6, 2026, MT On Peace, the Panama-flagged tanker, was struck by an unverified projectile out at sea near Oman.
The attacked vessel carried a 19-member crew, which included 17 Indian nationals. Twelve crew members were injured in the strike, 11 of whom are Indian.
Omani authorities and the local emergency services stepped in to assist the vessel after the attack in the rescue and evacuation process of all the injured sailors to Khasab and Oman, where they are receiving medical treatment.
The Spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, expressed gratitude towards the swift response of Omani authorities and reiterated New Delhi’s concerns over the recurring maritime attacks in the region. The MEA has also condemned the attack on the commercial vessel, as the consequences were faced by the bystanding crew members.
The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas and petroleum supply and continues to be a critical strategic point. The attack on the MT On Peace marks the latest in the ongoing series of security incidents targeting commercial shipping and civilians.
The intensified military tensions in recent months, regional cross-border warfare, and the international coalition have civilian mariners and merchant vessels in the crosshairs.
The MEA emphasised that freedom of navigation and commerce through international waterways must be restored without any further delay to protect the sailors, mariners, and various seafarers and prevent any disruption to the global markets, calling for an immediate halt to all the strikes on the civilian shipping infrastructure.
