Somalia-bound Cargo Ship Laden With Sugar & Rice Catches Fire Off Gujarat
A cargo vessel from India’s Jamnagar in the state of Gujarat caught fire at Porbandar’s Subhashnagar Jetty.
Firefighters arrived at the site with 3 tenders, and as the fire grew, the ship, which was headed to Bosaso, Somalia, was towed to open waters for safety reasons.
The ship is called Haridasan and is operated by HRM & Sons of Jamnagar. It was carrying 950 tons of rice and 100 tons of sugar.
According to reports, the blaze intensified due to the cargo, which also included diesel, forcing officials to tow the ship around a kilometre from the jetty and 100 kilometres out to sea to prevent any risk to the port and nearby vessels.
The Coast Guard helped in the firefighting effort and kept it in open waters until the fire came under control.
The vessel was to sail from Porbandar to Bosaso in Somalia. However, after the incident, the Porbandar fire team is on standby and is monitoring the situation closely.
Smoke from the vessel and black plumes were visible from a distance, and locals gathered at the nearby beach to watch the incident.
