On 28 March, NYK obtained approval from ClassNK for its 3D model-based approval of the basic design for an upcoming multi-purpose container vessel.

This marks the first-ever instance of an oceangoing vessel finishing off the basic design procedure, including the classification approval, using 3D drawings, as confirmed by ClassNK and NYK.

Conventionally, the structural design of new vessels is communicated via 2D drawings shared among shipowners, shipping companies, shipyards, and classification societies.

Even when 3D drawings are done in the primary design stage, they are converted to the 2D format for classification society approval owing to differences in the 3D CAD systems among firms and vessel types.

The conversion process and the subsequent 3D model evaluation founded on 2D drawing data have needed significant expertise and experience to interpret precisely.

In response to the challenges, ClassNK and NYK have collaborated to streamline the approval procedure for the new ship’s design.

They created a collaboration system permitting ClassNK to check the 3D model data developed by NYK, eradicating the need for data conversion to 2D drawings.

The approach enhances efficiency and facilitates more intuitive understanding and seamless communication among the parties involved in the design procedure.
